Bioaccumulation training course – From the theory to the practice

Bioaccumulation is the ability of an organism to absorb and concentrate chemicals in all or part of its body by establishing a relationship between the external environmental concentration of that substance and its amount in the organism. Bioaccumulation assessment is part of international efforts to identify and control chemicals of environmental concern. Toxicokinetic (TK) modelling is currently used to describe, formalize and predict the bioaccumulation dynamics of chemicals. In this training course, we will consider that the chemical can be bioaccumulated in the organism by four exposure routes: water, food, sediment and/or pore water. Under the framework of environmental risk assessment (ERA), we will investigate how OECD regulatory guidelines for conducting bioaccumulation studies can be analyzed from TK models to estimate bioaccumulation metrics.
